 Listening to a NPR program, in which a man was telling a story about a tree that grew in his yard, years ago....When the tree 'got too large', his landlord....concerned about the tree's roots destabilizing the house's foundation....had the tree cut down to its stump......the 'tenant' found a seedling, emerging from the now defunct tree, and planted it.......after the tree was 30 feet tall, again, there were 'issues' and the tree had to be cut down..... This time, the 'tenant' took one of the the fallen tree's segments, left on the ground after the arborists departed to cut down some more trees, to a woodcrafter who made the wood into a beautiful box, which, now....in itself....not only stored some memorabilia, but was, itself, a nostalgic Memory......Much of the 'clutter' in my home shares its status as Memory triggers.......like a cracked ceramic 'thing' that was: first, a candle stand from a restaurant where I was a young waiter....Sidney's 2nd Act....; then, it evolved into a stand for a pierced pottery oil lamp; then, a base for a Tibetan orb incense cone burner; a ravioli 'cutter', and, eventually into a top for opened cat food cans, since it was a perfect fit......Does this make me a 'hoarder' or a 'repurposer'? Well, I'm not about to toss it to the trashcan! My great Aunt, Lucille used to press the flowers from bouquets and 'arrangements' within the cotton-fiber pages of old books, then frame her 'arrangements' of dessicated flora and make cards to send her friends and family......in this tradition, this morning,,,,I spray-painted some dead leaves and squash with enamel paint that their beauty may persevere....rather than be dumped to the trash can and be crushed in the garbage collector's big truck...I was just wondering....if Sandy Culp still had one of those beautiful 'painted black' Halloween pumpkins from Six Flags, dissicated beneath glossy enamel paint.....

This morning, I attempted..with the assistance of a 3 page printed instructional pamphlet.....a bit shocked to find that it was 'written and printed' in The USA..... to disassemble a portable, battery-operated 'hand vac' that had begun to produce more rattling noise than suction, due to a 'design or manufacturing flaw' ........This, again, confirmed my opinion that imbecilic texting & twittering, messaging and spotifying has reached its unintentional (?) goal of Americans, having relinquished any capacity for clear expression, utilizing descriptive language and/or the ability to comprehend complexity...I wrote a "Dexterity Intelligence Quotient", during my first 'job'...sadly, with the "Redstone Arsenal Army Missile Command".....(a 'Summer Job'....hey, I was 20!~and this paid more than a job bagging groceries), between college semesters)..where, for a while, I wrote Instruction Manuals to facilitate Privates' ability to comprehend "written instructions"....The results of this Experiment led to the anticipation of future days, when 'Instructional Videos' would be widely available...'Monkey See/Monkey Do'.......Get a piece of rope and try it, yourself, being careful not to hang yourself with it.........

The Endless Enigma........for 15 years or so, the only significant technological advance was from b/w to 'color'....then screens got squarer and larger than 21".......25" screens ruled for a while.....then the inundation of 'improvements'.......surround sound and HDTV........I've had more TV's in the past ten years than in my entire lifetime, before them........I've hit a 'wall', so to speak, now.......curved, 4K OLED units with wireless streaming, built-in surveillance cameras and ever-listening microphones......and, of course, more confabulations to keep 'service providers' in your wallet! I'm 'behind' the Orwellian demands, although there IS an interest, due to being perpetually bombarded with Media Propaganda and the promised ability to watch just about everything ever filmed.....an appeal, certainly......At my age, however, the tech involvement, that I would have 'gotten into' in my 20's or 30's, is both more challenging, annoyingly complex, expensive and time-consuming.......Watching birds and furry critters, bugs and bats, flowers growing and the wind in the trees is being displaced by watching phone screens and 110" UHD TVs......which are bolstering the sale of big, adjustable, heated and cooled mattresses upon which to wile away Life in pursuit of passive media obsession and 'being entertained'......And, to think....in 1961, 'stereos' with swing-out speakers and drop-down turntable and a battery-powered FM radio were my only concern....and....wall switch light dimmers, naturally......I'm frustrated enough by my OLYMPUS DSLR, which is more complicated to operate than assembling a Maserati from 'parts bags'.........

I CAME ACROSS THIS 'DIANE ARBUS...LOOK-A-LIKE....PHOTOGRAPH, "Backwoods Inbreeding", THIS MORNING......FOR $25!

 considering selling some of my many cameras, I recalled one of the dumbest things that I've done......In 1970, I sold the Alpa Alnea 9-D camera that I got from Werner Von Braun.....to my next door neighbor....for $135!....., replacing it with a Pentax Spotmatic....later......duh!.... Then, to compound my stupidity, I sold my Hasselblad for $300 because I couldn't afford a new 'film back' for the instrument!, later replacing it with a look-a-like Bronica! duh...duh! The 'upside' is that I never use a 'real' camera anymore...just my 5 year-old phone-camera.....It's not about the 'hardware', anyway....but the brain and eye behind the viewfinder.......I was accepted by Brooks, with a portfolio done with a 'shoebox' pinhole camera and homemade film, made from photosensitive paper that I made in my mother's coat closet.......Brooks instructed me to 'get' a Calumet 'view' camera for 'sheet film'.....so I sold the beautiful 1933 Leica IIIF for that 'box on a tripod'......then, never went to California......ditching the Calumet for a stack of books on American Composition and Rhetoric and a box of Agrarian Writers' works, 2 D.H. Lawrence novels, 2 Henry James novels, a 1st Edition of Joyce's ULYSSES and The Complete Works Of William Faulkner......I still have that old Mamiya, with a 'motor drive'....but it languishes, in it's original box, as it has for the past 2 decades....maybe longer........
